What does it mean to repent?

Many people understand repentance to mean feeling sorry for your failures and sins. But Jesus meant something far more radical when he called people to repent. As Professor N. T. Wright explains, Jesus was telling them they were heading in the wrong direction and needed to turn around if they were going to follow him. Repentance is absolutely vital to submitting to Jesus’ lordship as Messiah-king. And to be a follower of Jesus means submitting to his lordship.
